Rock asked:
As I’m trying to lose weight, I’m cutting out red meat, and having veggie burgers when the mood for a burger hits me- can anyone recommend the best brand of veggie burgers, that won’t pack on fat, and are tasty?
Also, as Thanksgiving is around the xcorner, are there any good veggie substitutes for a dead turkey?
It’s odd- after eating a veggie burger, i feel energized and alert- after eating a meat burger or steak, i feel drained and tired…I never could figure out why…

I actually enjoy both brands Boca and Morning Star (I think that’s the name of it…) They’re both extremely yummy! And if you’d like to try some Mushroom burgers (which are also quite delish) get the Garden Fresh brand!
Good luck!

My wife and I have been meat free since march and are big fans of the Boca Burgers… they have different versions, but we like the “flame broiled” version. Not only do they have burgers, but other products as well.
Morning Star also offers great veggie food as well. You can use the “ground beef” for normal dishes requiring meat. Additionally, the “chicken patties” are GREAT!
As for Thanksgiving, we’ve heard that tofurkey is good, but have yet to try it.

I recommend you try the different ones to find out what is your favorite. Some are dryer then others. I personally like Boca Burgers.
The answer to your second question is – It takes more of your bodies resources and energy to digest beef protein found in beef burgers and stakes then it does to digest the vegetable protein in veggie burgers.

Sadly, the best ones are not low in fat. Morningstar Farms Grillers Prime are my favorite, and they have 9 grams of fat and 170 calories.
The Garden Veggie patty is a better choice, at 3.5 grams of fat and 110 calories, but it isn’t nearly as good.
For Thanksgiving I plan to do a Tofurkey feast- it comes with the roast, gravy, stuffing and dumplings- you cook it with the vegetables and you’re all set.
If you’re sharing your Thanksgiving meal with meat eaters, a pie is a good option- stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy baked in a pie crust- with or without seitan. Omnivores usually like it.

it’s not odd at all that you feel energized after eating a veggie burger.
those veggie burgers are full of nutrients not meat has. Vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates, and they still have protein. the only thing meat has is protein and not to mention saturated fats.
Just to clarify protein does not supply your body energy while carbs do…
another great substitute for meat is rice and beans, any kind of rice and beans. each one the bean and the grain is lacking in the complete amino acids your body needs. but each the beans make up for the amino acids the rice doesn’t have, and the rice makes up for the beans. plus it’s super filling.
good luck on your new diet. i’m sure if you continue to listen to your body you’ll find that there are a lot of things you eat that leave you drained. while delicious fresh vegetables and fruits always provide a full tummy and healthy energy
